CBD vs.THC: What is the difference? Benefits & Legality (UK)

As CBD starts to hit the headlines and gain traction within the healthcare and wellness industry more and more people are asking, what is difference between CBD and THC? This is predominantly due to the fact until recently Cannabis and press surrounding the plant have been associated with getting “high” and it being an illegal substance (at least within the UK).

With both CBD and THC present in marijuana, almost identical compounds and both able to help support healthy bodily functions which one do you take and how do you know its safe and legal to use? To answer this question, we must first understand the difference between these two compounds.

CBD, which is short for Cannabidiol is a chemical compound found in the cannabis plant. It is just one of hundreds of compounds called “cannabinoids”. CBD is fast becoming a rising star due to its ability to help to maintain and support healthy bodily functions without the negative effects often associated with THC. Whether that be the feeling of getting “high”, paranoia or in some cases in the UK breaking the law.

Will CBD Get Me High?

Unlike its cousin THC (also known as Tetrahydrocannabinol) CBD does not produce the feeling of being “high” due to the different way it interacts with receptors in the brain the ECS (Endocannabinoid System - This system is responsible for supporting the overall wellbeing in human bodies).

For example, THC activates Cannabinoid type 1 (CB1) receptor whilst CBD inhibits it, blocking the feeling of euphoria and intoxication.

THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol)

THC, which is also know as Tetrahydrocannabinol is also a compound found in the cannabis plant. THC is one of hundreds of cannabinoids identified in cannabis. THC is the principal psychoactive constituent of cannabis.

Will THC Get Me High?

Unlike its cousin CBD, THC is a psychoactive compound which gives you the feeling of being “high”. Although a similar chemical make-up to its counterpart CBD, THC targets the chemical in the brain “anandamide”, THC binds to these cannabinoid receptors and activates neurons which can cause adverse effects on the body such as short-term memory, co-ordination and communication.

Is CBD legal in the UK?

CBD is completely legal in the UK, provided it has been derived from an industrial hemp strain that is EU approved and contains less than 0.2% THC. It is always best to purchase CBD from a legitimate source to ensure its potency and legality.

Is Marijuana inc THC legal in the Uk?

Although some forms of marijuana are available by prescription in the UK it is heavily regulated. For the most part Cannabis remains illegal in the UK to possess, grow, distribute or sell. This is mainly because of its mind altering effects on the user.
